Montegemoli
Montegemoli
Montegemoli is an ancient castle and hamlet in an unspoilt area of the Val di Cecina, surrounded by stunning countryside made up of a patchwork of valleys and woods. With a history dating back to the Neolithic age, the village was of great strategic importance due to its close proximity to the salt deposits in the area and in fact the village was regularly conquered and pillaged right up until the 17th century. The first written evidence of the village can be found in a document dated 1121 signed by Pope Callisto II. In 1883, the current owners, the Conti d’Albertis family bought the castle and hamlet
Today Montegemoli still preserves many of its original features, for example the cylindrical, medieval tower and the church of San Bartolomeo, which dates back to the 13th century. Inside the church you will find the ‘Madonna del Melograno e Bambino’ by Francesco Neri Guntarini, painted around 1360.
