This lovely old villa became a hotel in 1890 and today enjoys an incredibile view and a fantastic position right in the centre of the old town, allowing visitors to explore the wonders of Volterra on foot.
Just a few meters away is the magnificent town square, Piazza dei Priori, the heart of the city and theatre to its main events. Close by are the Duomo, Baptistry and the Archeological Park which has a fantastic green area which both young and old can enjoy. Not to be missed are the Etruscan Museum, the Pinacoteca (art gallery), with some well known works by Rosso Fiorentino, the remains of the Roman theatre, the famous arched doorway (Porta all’Arco) and the pleasure of wandering through the characteristic narrow streets and stumbling across seemingly endless views.
This small hotel offers a warm and simple atmosphere and has in the past welcomed many famous visitors to Volterra including D.H. Lawrence, Gabriele D’Annunzio, Claudia Cardinale, Jean Sorel.
The Hotel has a restaurant, a bar with television and a lift. Easy to reach in the car to unload baggage; pay parking is available in a guarded, public car park just 100m away. Open all year. |

The main characteristic of the hotel’s rooms is that no two rooms are the same. Each room has been personalized with its own furniture and fittings, and has all modern comforts including private bathroom, bath accessories, satellite TV, telephone, heating and hairdryer. Particular attention is paid to cleanliness. Simple and welcoming the warm atmosphere will help you feel relaxed and at home.
The restaurant
The excellent restaurant ‘Al Ristoro’, open to the public, offers top quality tuscan cuisine, made from fresh, simple ingredients carefully chosen from local products. The Chef’s specialities include typical, local dishes based on boar and hare, mushrooms and truffles as well as dishes traditional to the coastal areas, for example ‘Baccalà’ from Livorno and the famous ‘Cacciucco’ (fish soup). All accompanied by a careful selection of wines from some of the most famous Tuscan names to local DOC wines. The large dining room can seat up to 120 people and is particularly suitable for weddings, special occasions, work dinners or groups.
Half or full board available on request. Guests are offered a discount on the à la carte menu.

Once an ancient, Etruscan city, then Roman, Volterra is a stunning town set along a ridge that dominates the surrounding hills. It is worth taking time to explore its bustling streets, squares, and medieval buildings and visit the many craft and local produce shops. Not to be missed are the famous alabaster workshops. This precious stone has been worked in Volterra since the 5th century. The famous Etruscan statue ‘Ombra della Sera’, or ‘Shadow of the Night’, is on show here in one of Italy’s major archaeological museums, the Museo Guarnacci.
