IN THE AREA :
Situated in an extraordinary countryside of woods and rolling hills, now protected by the Dolce Campagna, Antiche Mura project, Gambassi Terme is the perfect spot for walks in the hills and amongst the olive groves or for a gentle stroll through the streets, steeped in history, of this typical Tuscan village with its soft colours and stunning views.
Places of interest include the parish church of Santa Maria a Chianni, which dates back to the end of the 12th century, the church of the Misericordia with valuable terracotta statues, the park of the Palazzo Comunale of the 17th century and the spa. Gambassi was also well known for its ‘glass makers’, who from 1300s produced objects famous throughout Italy and which can now be viewed in a permanent exhibition in the Palazzo Comunale.
Amongst the various events held in Gambassi, the ‘Mostra-Mercato’ (Show-Market) during the last week of august is worth a visit. Stands are set up exhibiting local craftwork and visitors can taste typical, local products. Nearest cities: San Gimignano 20 km, Siena 55 km, Firenze 55 km, Pisa 70 km. |
