Monsummano Terme is a small spa town in the northern part of Tuscany with a population of about 20,000 inhabitants.    The spa, which became popular in the 1800s, is located in the historical building ‘Grotta Guisti Terme’,  The Grotta is a steamy cave lined with stalagmites and stalactites whilst outside there is an outside pool which has comfortably warm water and water jets.  Massage, anti-stress and beauty treatments are available.  The church of Santa Maria di Fontenuova (XVII century), the parish Museum, the oratory of San Carlo and the natural Thermal Caves of Giusti and Partanti can be admired in the town.
The council district of Monsummano, in the Valdinievole, extends for 32,77 square kilometres over the plains and hills of Monte Albano to the marshes of Fucecchio. Feudal centre, then Seat of Podesta office, it became the town we see today in 1775 when the two medieval centres of Monsummano Alto and Montevettolini were united.
For all nature lovers a walk on the Montalbano hills is a must.  The area is home to a rare vegetation due to the unusual rock and terrain and over 24 species of wild orchids have been discovered.  There are many footpaths in and around Monsummano catering for all levels.  Nearby is the ‘Padule di Fucecchio’, a huge marsh area and a natural reserve.  Rich in flora and fauna this is a true paradise for all birdwatchers.  Here you can see herons (nesting in colonies), cranes, black storks and over 150 different species of bird, species of water lilies, ferns and the utricle (a carnivorous plant).
Monusmanno Terme is also an important industrial centre, particularly known for its shoe making.  Nearest cities:  Montecatini Terme 6 km, Pistoia 16 km, Lucca 35 km, Florence 52 km.
