Dinosaur Park, Peccioli
The dinosaur park in Peccioli was founded in 1977 by a circus artist who decided to settle in Peccioli at the end of his circus career. Together with his brother he bought two hectares of vines and here they discovered the earth was full of shells, foot prints and fossils. Then followed the idea to put these treasures from the past on show and so the Dinosaur Park was born, a good thirteen years before Crichton’s book Jurassic Park and sixteen years before Spielberg’s film.
The two brothers, Guido and Paolo Ghironi, built the first five, prehistoric animals in the space of just a few months. The reconstructions are scientifically correct and ideal for teaching purposes whilst providing at the same time an almost circus like entertainment.
All through the year children accompanied by parents or teachers can walk between the feet of these enormous prehistoric reptiles and gaze up at these fascinating creatures - all just a stone’s throw from the centre of Peccioli.
Under the guidance of qualified staff, the Dinosaur Park becomes a fascinating, three dimensional book, an adventure through Prehistory on the discovery of the beginnings of life on earth and the evolution of the species. Perfect for both young and old.
Today the Park boasts twenty reconstructions, including a full size reproduction of a brachiosaurus from the late Jurassic period - the biggest dinosaur replica in Europe – and a volcano which erupts coloured balls!
Immediately outside the Park is a large playground and picnic area perfect for children of all ages. The entrance ticket is valid all day and there is a special route for disabled visitors.
The Park has always welcomed camper vans and offers free parking, water and electricity.
The magic of Prehistory mixed with the magic of the circus is the perfect balance between knowledge and entertainment and ideal for old and young alike. Highly recommended for anyone holidaying with children.
