Itineraries in Tuscany
Where ever you go in Tuscany you will be amazed by the incredible countryside that this region offers, from the natural parks and oasis, to the Etruscan coastline with its wonderful sea to the gentle rolling hills inland marked by the age old traditions of wine making, like for example the Chianti hills.
This region is a true mix offering something for everyone. The gentle patchwork of fields, farmhouses and cypress trees, the more severe woods of the Metallifere hills, the wilder region of the Maremma or the snow capped peaks of the Appennines and the Alpi Apuane.
Tuscan is mountains. Monte amiata, once a volcano, lies between the province of Siena and Grosseto, whilst the Monti Pisani can be found between Pisa and Lucca and finally Monte Cetona, at the furthest south-east point of the province of Siena separates the Val d’Orcia (Orcia valley) from the Val di Chiana (Chiana ValleyTuscany is history. Florence is one of the most visited cities in the world attracting tourists of all nationalities. Then there is Siena with its Piazza del Campo and the world famous Palio (horse race); Pisa with its leaning tower and baptistery; Arezzo and the Pieve di Santa Maria; Livorno and the old fortress; Lucca with its old city walls.
Equally fascinating are the smaller, perfectly preserved medieval villages and hamlets such as San Gimignano, Fiesole, Volterra and Montepulciano. Seeped in history too are the fashionable beaches in Versilia, the incredible beauty of Elba Island, the Tuscan archipelago and the Argentario coast.
Tuscany offers some stunning routes, like the Via dei Cavalleggeri which takes the visitor on the horse trail along the coast which joins up the lookout towers of the Province of Pisa, Livorno and Grosseto. If you leave from Maremma and travel through the Regional Parks of the Maremma, San Rossore and the Alpi Apuane you will meet the Francigena Way in Lunigiana. The beautiful, remote horsetrail of the Terre di Siena offers wonderful views of the arid, almost moon like landscape around Accona.
Tuscany is mystic too. Castles, abbeys, monasteries like the Pieve di Romena, the castles of Porciano, Montemignaio and San Niccolò, the Vallombrosa abbey and the Camaldoli hermitage.
Tuscany is wellness and beauty. This region has the greatest number of spas in Italy. Saturnia, Montecatini e Chianciano, and also Gambassi Terme in the Province of Pisa and Casciana Terme in the Province of Florence to name but a few. Hot waters rich in natural goodness, natural springs, swimming pools and age old thermal caves, like the Giusti Cave, can be found in places of immense natural beauty with all the benefits of modern, efficient complexes.
Tuscany is food. Here you find flavours and dishes from times gone by like cured ham, the famous, fiorentine ‘ribollita’ soup, bean soup, spelt soup. Game is a traditional ingredient – hare or wild boar with homemade pasta or ‘pappardelle’. The Florentine steak is a must, whilst who can resist trying the world famous deserts ‘panforte’ and ‘cantucci’. Tuscan cuisine is diverse - from fennel seed salame to seafood dishes such as the famous fish soup from Livorno, il ‘caciucco’.
Summer or winter Tuscany has something for everyone.
Come and visit!
